Utah marathoner sets world record dressed as a carrot

The world's fastest fruit now becomes the world's fastest vegetable

On Jan. 16, at the Rock n’ Roll Arizona Marathon in Phoenix, Jordan Maddocks of Draper, Utah, set a Guinness costume world record for the fastest marathon dressed as a vegetable, specifically a carrot, when he finished the race in 2:44:12. Maddocks now holds the title of the world’s fastest fruit and vegetable.

In 2020, Maddocks completed the same marathon dressed in a banana suit, finishing the race in 2:41:27, breaking the fruit costume marathon record by six minutes.

Maddocks chose to run in the banana suit in support of his friend, who was going through a double lung transplant surgery. “The idea seemed wild at the time,” he says. “I knew my costume was going to lift the spirit of my friend, who was going through a tough time.”

Maddocks is more than just a healthy snack when he races, as he boasts a 2:34 marathon PR. “I was a four-hour marathoner in 2017,” he says. “Since then, I started working with Tommy “Rivers” Puzey to qualify for the Boston Marathon, and ultimately get faster.” Puzey is a professional ultra-runner and motivational speaker from Flagstaff, Ariz.

The carrot costume he chose has a symbolic meaning in Maddocks’s life. “I have struggled with substance abuse in my past,” Maddocks says. “Running has been my way out of that lifestyle.”

Maddocks ran for the Release Recovery Foundation, which is dedicated to helping those struggling with addiction and mental illness, founded by marathoner and Bachelorette contestant Zac Clark. On Jan. 20, America’s largest vegetable company, The Green Giant, announced they would be donating $5,000 toward Maddocks’s fundraising efforts.

“If there’s one thing that running has taught me, it’s never too late to chase your goals,” Maddocks says. Do not expect to see Maddocks dressed as an orange or tomato at next year’s R&R Marathon, as the 35-year-old has his eyes set on qualifying for the U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials in 2024.
