Haynes and Boone Bolsters Chicago Office by Adding Seasoned IP Litigators

June 27, 2019

Ralph Gabric and Laura Beth Miller, who boast decades of experience handling high-profile intellectual property disputes, have joined Haynes and Boone, LLP as partners in the firm’s Chicago office.

“Our practice is built around top-notch IP trial lawyers and teams that work well together and put the clients first. Ralph and Laura are a perfect fit for us on all counts,” said Richard Rochford, chair of the firm’s Intellectual Property Litigation Practice Group. “We are really looking forward to working together.”

Gabric and Miller “are skilled advocates who fit in well with our culture,” added Managing Partner Tim Powers. “They will provide tremendous value to our clients and help us grow our already formidable IP Practice in Chicago and beyond.”

Gabric is a veteran trial lawyer who has served as lead counsel on many big-ticket patent matters. He represents clients in both jury and bench trials and appeals to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, as well as in post-grant review proceedings before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB). His litigation experience spans a variety of technologies, including software, medical devices, communications networks, cellular telephony, automotive, infrared cameras, and various internet-based technologies. He also represents generic pharmaceutical companies in Hatch-Waxman pharmaceutical litigation and has served as lead counsel in cases involving numerous drug products.

Gabric previously served on the board of directors of Brinks Gilson & Lione and chaired its litigation practice. Like Miller, he is deeply involved in community service, including previous service as a board member and president of CARPLS, the largest provider of free legal services in Chicago.

“I have worked with many Haynes and Boone lawyers and each has impressed me,” Gabric said. “I am excited to help Haynes and Boone expand in Chicago, where I have spent my entire career, and in other markets.”

Miller represents high tech companies in a broad range of IP matters, including patent infringement actions in the International Trade Commission and arbitrations over the misappropriation of trade secrets. She previously was a shareholder and co-chair of the litigation practice at Brinks Gilson & Lione in Chicago.

“My clients increasingly manage IP portfolios that are global in scope, so I am thrilled to join a firm like Haynes and Boone that offers an expanded platform to handle large, sophisticated IP matters on a national and international basis” Miller said.

Miller has served as an adjunct professor at The John Marshall Law School in Chicago and is a board member of the Legal Prep Charter Academy, a free, open enrollment public charter school on Chicago’s west side that seeks to have every student graduate and enroll in college. She also is active in pro bono matters, including volunteering with Legal Aid Chicago, which provides free legal service to Chicago residents living in poverty.

Haynes and Boone’s national IP Litigation Practice has a track record of successful results for the firm’s clients in the ITC and federal District Courts, the Federal Circuit and other United States Courts of Appeal, the United States Patent and Trademark Office, and numerous state courts, foreign tribunals and arbitration panels. In the Intellectual Asset Management (IAM) Patent 1000 2019 ranking of patent practices, researchers lauded the firm as one of the “best-rounded” patent practices nationally. Additionally, the 2019 U.S. edition of Managing Intellectual Property’s IP Stars directory recognized the firm nationally for its excellence in PTAB Litigation, Trademark Prosecution, and the Patent Prosecution and Trademark Contentious practice areas.

Haynes and Boone is an international corporate law firm with offices in Texas, New York, California, Charlotte, Chicago, Denver, Washington, D.C., London, Mexico City and Shanghai, providing a full spectrum of legal services in energy, technology, financial services and private equity. With more than 550 lawyers, Haynes and Boone is ranked among the largest U.S.-based firms by The National Law Journal, The American Lawyer and The Lawyer.
