Squire Patton Boggs (SPB) is adding a new partner in Sydney from Baker McKenzie.

Hai-Dang Nguyen has been appointed partner by the global firm, adding an expert with more than 18 years’ experience to the fold. The prominent banking and finance specialist has a particular focus on acquisition and leveraged finance, property finance, project finance, structured finance and securitisation, trade finance, and general corporate lending.

He has been with Baker McKenzie, where he was most recently special counsel, since 1999. During his stint at the international firm, he led in many complex financings.

His clients come from a range of sectors, including banking, financial services, commercial and hospitality, real estate, energy, mining, construction, automotive, recruitment services, food, agribusiness, education, telecommunications, and entertainment.

“It is rare to come across a lawyer with such widespread expertise in virtually every area of banking and finance,” said John Poulsen, SPB’s Australian managing partner. “He is widely recognised as an astute negotiator with an in-depth knowledge of finance law.”
Nguyen’s arrival fits with the firm’s growth, especially after recent developments in its Sydney office, said Campbell Davidson, the firm’s Sydney office managing partner.

“Our recent move to Aurora Place has highlighted the exponential growth of our Sydney office. The addition of Hai-Dang will bolster the strength of our banking and finance capabilities, which will also ensure support for our other rapidly growing practices. Hai-Dang is an ideal fit at this stage in the firm’s development,” Davidson said.

Nguyen’s move comes after Baker McKenzie’s recent hire of senior debt capital markets and securitisation expert Duncan McGrath, who is moving from the Gilbert + Tobin partnership

Last month, SPB added of counsel David Starkoff in Sydney from Corrs Chambers Westgarth.
